I’m not a personal trainier. I’ve just been exercising a long time and there’s a couple doctors in the family I bounce things off of. You pick up things here and there. The human body is amazing… the more you learn how it works the more amazing it becomes once you understand the many ways it can adapt.

Cont.Hard contractions while exercising and flexing in between sets actually “tells” nearby blood vessels it (the muscle) need more blood to perform. This process changes the shape of the matrix protein fibronectin, which in turn, signals relaxation of smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels. This enabled the blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow. So the “pump” many bodybuilders refer to is more than for show and actually benefits performance.

Yep, to tense, squeeze and contract your bicep or other muscle are all the same thing. Your biceps are one part of what’s medically called a antagonist pair. The opposing muscle is your tricep. So when you contract one, the other is relaxed. Does contracting your muscles and also flexing offer any benefit or is it just vanity?Well science has recently confirmed it does help. Here’s why.

when he says “contract your bicep”, what does he mean by that? Should I be lifting the weight and then towards the end of the curl tense my bicep? And then slowly lower the weight and untense my bicep and then so on?

Good demo of cable curls:watch?v=ruEyIhkS7SwNote you only lift with biceps and on the down stroke don’t go lower than a bit below horizontal, then back up again. Killer routine:1. 3-4 sets freeweight bicep curls with dumbells or barbells.2. Follow with several sets of cable curls to failure.3. Finish with preacher curls. Rest 3-4 minutes, then repeat cycle.

In addition to using barbells and dumbells for curls if you go to a gym or have some cable equipment at home doing both one and two hand low pulley bicep curls can be very effective. Unlike free weights that have varying resistance depending where you are in the curl movement cable curls done correctly put constant and equal resistance throught out the movement and can really offer a good pump. Similar with either a Bowflex or Soloflex, but I prefer a weight stack machine.
